What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a research-based approach to therapy that focuses on strengthening emotional bonds between couples. It is grounded in the belief that secure and resilient relationships are essential for overall well-being. EFT helps individuals and couples identify patterns of communication that lead to conflict and distance, and guides them in developing more secure and trusting ways of relating to one another. I provide EFT to help my clients navigate and transform their relationships, fostering deeper connections and emotional intimacy.
Emotionally Focused Therapy is an evidence-based approach, rigorously tested and proven to help couples and produce lasting results. EFT is one of the most researched and empirically validated experiential approaches that has been shown to improve emotional functioning and strengthen the bond between partners. EFT is based on adult attachment theory, which finds that we feel safer when we are emotionally bonded with another.
Through a relational and trauma informed lens, EFT helps individuals and couples identify patterns of communication that lead to conflict and distance, and guides them in developing more secure and trusting ways of relating to one another. EFT accomplishes its goal by working in stages. The stages creates for focus each session and keeps us on target.
The Stages of EFT Provide Us with a Map
Assessment and Cycle De-escalation: During this stage, we will work together to identify the negative patterns that are causing distress in your life or relationship. We will focus on de-escalating any heightened emotions and creating a safe space for exploration and understanding.
Changing Interactional Patterns: In this stage, we will delve deeper into the underlying emotions and attachment needs that drive your behaviors and reactions. We will work on restructuring these patterns to create more secure and fulfilling relationships with yourself and others.
Consolidation and Integration: As we move into the consolidation stage, we will reinforce the progress made and integrate new ways of relating into your daily life. This stage focuses on practicing healthier ways of connecting and maintaining the changes achieved throughout therapy.
In each stage of Emotionally Focused Therapy, we will work together to help you find your personal voice, understand your emotions, and create stronger connections with yourself and those around you.
